MICCA 2007

I attended the MICCA conference today in Baltimore, MD. I also presented my paper Social Computing in the Enterprise. I have been a member of MICCA on and off since 1998. I have presented three times. I always meet great people and learn a lot. The keynote speaker today was David Warlick. He told us that in a world of rapid change, we need to teach the students how to teach themselves.  We need to maintain our classrooms as learning engines. We also need to have our own personal learning network. Below are some links and books that Mr. Warlick mentioned. Sleep Deprivation Seminar

During the Sleep Deprivation seminar, Dr. Teodor Postolache introduced us to many eye opening topics. :-) During the seminar Dr. Postolache said that 40 million Americans manifest sleep disorders. He also said that over 100,000 motor vehicle accidents can be attributed to sleep disorders. It was very interesting to know that sleep can be measured. An EEG can diagnose the sleep state and rapid eye movement (REM) can be monitored to see what stage of REM state you are in such as REM (with dreams, later at night) sleep or Non REM sleep (without dreams, earlier at night, deeper sleep). Dr. Postolache said that if we sacrifice the Non REM sleep that is earlier at night, then we are sacrificing deeper sleep. This can occur if we go to bed late. Dr. Postolache also explained our states 1.Wake a. Sleep latency-after you wake, not fully awake, 10-20 minutes after waking up, our abilities are not at our best; b. Alert-most alert time especially in the evening around 6 pm; c. Sleepy – this is w...

Science in the New Millennium, Dr. Donna J. Nelson, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Oklahoma

4/12/07 Science in the New Millennium, Dr. Donna J. Nelson, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Oklahoma Wow, this seminar was interesting. First I had lunch with Dr. Donna Nelson and the members of the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) organization. During lunch Dr. Nelson answered our questions and talked about being a woman professor. She then started to talk about the number of women and minorities that are professors. Dr. Nelson completed research on the number of Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors in the top 50 departments in 14 science and engineering specialties. I found out that Dr. Nelson was going to present her data at an Advance Distinguished Speaker Series Seminar at 4:00, so I went to the seminar. This is where she showed the data. It was jaw dropping. The number of African American Assistant professors is pitiful. Needless to say the number of associate and full professors is worse than pitiful. I will let you interp...

Business and Dining Etiquette Seminar, 4/12/07

Posts Business and Dining Etiquette Seminar, 4/12/07(I haven't added all of the details for this post, be back soon.) On April 12 th I attended one more seminar at UMBC on April 12 th . This seminar was the Business & Dining Etiquette seminar. It was, what else can I say, excellent. All of the seminars that I attend at UMBC are excellent. This seminar was divided into two parts. The first part was the Networking seminar. The second was the Etiquette seminar. During the Networking seminar, Ms. Marcia Hall of Reputation Counts ( http://www.reputationcounts.com ) taught us networking tips. She told us that networking is responsible for 87% of jobs found. This was not surprising to me because I am reading “What Color is My Parachute” and it says the same thing. Ms. Hall taught us how to shake hands, tell what we want to do, and make contacts. (More information to come.) In the Etiquette seminar, Ms. Carol Haislip, of the International School of Protocol ( http://www.internationals...

Girls in IT

This week I went to my first Computer Mania Day organization meeting. I am going to help with the Registration on the day of the conference. This purpose of Computer Mania day is to spur girls to become interested in technology. The longterm goal is to get them to pursue technical and engineering careers. Since I happen to teach a computer class and have a very low enrollment of girls, this particular topic is of interest to me.  As I find articles of interest, I will post them to this blog.
